Mahalia Jackson Elementary School Receives $50,000 from Dollar General's Reading Revolution

September 08, 2017
Dollar General Corporation representatives arrived at Mahalia Jackson Elementary School in New Orleans on September 6, ready to start a revolution. Company representatives carried a yellow and black box with a very special gift inside. When school leaders opened the box in front of an auditorium of curious students, they were surprised and elated to find a check for $50,000 as part of the company’s Reading Revolution program!

“Dollar General is very passionate about its mission of Serving Others, and we are excited to surprise Mahalia Jackson Elementary School with a financial donation to support its reading and literacy programs,” said Denine Torr, Dollar General’s senior director of community initiatives. “We hope this donation will help equip the school with the tools and resources it needs to strengthen the learning experience for students.”

Funds donated to schools through the Reading Revolution program are intended to be used to improve literacy and education goals through the purchase of books, technology programs, computers and/or other educational supplies or resources. Since its inception in 2013, Dollar General has donated more than $2.3 million to schools through its Reading Revolution program.

“I must tell you, I almost had a heart attack from the surprise,” noted Mahalia Jackson Principal LaKeysha London. “I was not expecting to receive such a generous donation. Words cannot express our gratitude! It was a true blessing, and you have no idea how much we needed the support.”
