Employee Education Opportunities
In living out Dollar General’s mission of Serving Others, the Company is invested in the growth and development of its employees and believes everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue their educational goals. Dollar General shows this through the below robust employee education opportunities.
- Workforce Edge Partnership: In April 2022, Dollar General announced full-time employees may utilize a yearly tuition assistance allocation through Workforce Edge to fund completing or starting a new degree program at a higher education institution of their choice. In addition to increased degree options and tuition assistance for full-time employees, all Dollar General employees and their immediate family members have access to Sophia Learning, an online, on-demand self-paced learning platform. This will provide general education courses to help members kick-start the education journey and pursue professional development.
- Tuition Reimbursement: Currently, full-time employees may receive up to $4,000 per calendar year to obtain reimbursement of approved programs at select universities for tuition in their associate’s or bachelor’s degree coursework, books, fees, certifications or certificate programs.
Employees may also be eligible for additional tuition discounts and other savings at hundreds of university partners. The program provides schools with both on campus and online courses including American University, Duke University Science and Society, Florida Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Syracuse University, Vanderbilt University, Peabody College and many more.
- ACE CREDIT® Recommendation: DG store managers who complete the Company’s Store Manager Training program are eligible to receive credit hours toward the completion of an undergraduate degree after an evaluation by the American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT®).
- Turner Family Scholarship Fund: Created in 1999 to mark the 60th anniversary of Dollar General’s founding and to honor co-founder Cal Turner Sr.’s four children, all full-time and part-time DG employees who have served for one year and full-time employees’ children are eligible to receive a scholarship for any course work relating to the personal development of the applicant. This may include coursework striving towards a GED or high-school equivalency exam, adult basic education, or personal development, which can be completed at community college, vocational school or four-year university.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation plans to announce Youth Literacy Grants on September 8, 2022 that aim to support students K-12 taking the next step toward a bright future. The grants help fund new or expand existing literacy programs, purchase new technology, books, materials or software for literacy programs. Schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations who seek to help students that are below grade level or have trouble reading are eligible to apply here each January.
With the belief everyone deserves an equal opportunity to receive a basic education, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) was created in 1993 in honor of Dollar General’s co-founder, J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate and never completed a formal education. For nearly 30 years, the DGLF has invested in and provided financial assistance to literacy programs increasing access, enhancing the quality of instruction and inspiring and advancing innovation. To date, DGLF has awarded $216M+ to support literacy and learning, enabling more than 15.4 million people to achieve their goals.
These offers and programs showcase Dollar General’s continued focus and investment in literacy initiatives and increased educational opportunities for the communities it calls home. More information, including how to sign up for savings, are available at dollargeneral.com.
