Dollar General Helps Serve Others in Atlanta

Company partners with NCAA®, Atlanta Basketball Host Committee, The Boys and Girls Club and Unilever ahead of the Final Four


In an effort to serve the community hosting the Final Four, Dollar General partnered with the NCAA, Atlanta Basketball Host Committee (ABHC) and Unilever to revitalize the Joseph B. Whitehead Boys & Girls Club as part of the 2020 Final Four Legacy Project presented by AXE, a Unilever brand.
 
On Tuesday, February 11, hundreds of volunteers from Dollar General, Unilever, the NCAA and the ABHC gathered at the Joseph B. Whitehead Boys & Girls Club to begin the restoration of the Club. To inspire volunteers and members of the Boys & Girls Club, Atlanta basketball legend and former University of Georgia forward Dominique Wilkins delivered a pep talk to kick off the Final Four Legacy Project.
 
Final Four Legacy Project volunteers supported a variety of cosmetic and meaningful restoration projects both inside and outside the building, including installing new furniture and shelving, creating inspirational murals for various program rooms, painting walls and doors throughout the building, building outdoor awnings, enhancing play spaces, landscaping, cleaning and more.
 
“In keeping with our mission of Serving Others, approximately 250 Dollar General employees proudly volunteered for the Final Four Legacy Project,” said Steve Sunderland, Dollar General executive vice president of store operations. “We are excited to serve the local Atlanta community and the Joseph B. Whitehead Boys & Girls Club, helping provide a space where everyone can learn and thrive.”
 
As one of the more than 20 Club locations in the metro Atlanta area, the Joseph B. Whitehead Boys & Girls Club serves more than 385 youth and teenage members. First opened in 1944 as a summer recreational program, the Club has a longstanding history of serving youth and teenagers in the Atlanta area, working with hundreds of kids each year to help them reach their full potential.
 
“Through character building, healthy lifestyles and academic programming, the Boys & Girls Club is helping to change the narrative by providing youth with needed resources and role models,” said Nicole Pietro, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta chief development officer. “We are thankful for volunteers and partners like the NCAA, ABHC, Unilever and Dollar General for their support of our Club, its members and the community through the Final Four Legacy Project.”
