Dollar General Celebrates 50th Reading Revolution

May 02, 2016
At Dollar General, we’re always looking for ways to serve others. Whether that be our customers, employees or organizations in the communities we call home. So when we arrived at East Elementary School in Punta Gorda, Fla. we were fully prepared to start a revolution.

Carrying a yellow and black box, Dollar General representatives were anxious to present a very special gift to the school. After reading to the students, they presented school administrators the gift box and when the school leaders opened it, they were surprised to find a check for $50,000!

This was the launch of the 50th Reading Revolution by Dollar General, marking the $2 million donation milestone for the program. Over 34,000 students (yes – 34,000), have been impacted by the program, which has been improving the lives of students through literacy and education since its inception in 2013.

“We are extremely excited to celebrate Dollar General’s 50th Reading Revolution program today, as well as how the $2 million in donations through this program have positively impacted so many students’ lives,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO.  “We created the Reading Revolution program to not only embody our mission of Serving Others, but also provide an immediate and longstanding positive effect on students, schools and communities.”

The Reading Revolution program was created to enhance students’ reading and literacy programs. The funds donated by Dollar General are used by school administrators to best achieve this goal by purchasing books, technology programs, computers and/or other educational supplies or resources.

East Elementary School and the additional 49 recipients of the Reading Revolution donations were chosen either because of strong community contributions to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation through the Cash Cube program at a nearby store, based on community need or their proximity to a Dollar General distribution center.
