This week, Dollar General representatives visited Alpine Independent School District in Alpine, Texas, surprising the administration and students with a shiny black box topped with a yellow bow. Inside the box was a check for $50,000!

“Dollar General is proud to invest in the communities we call home, and this donation will help to fund books, learning programs and more for each student that enters Alpine schools,” said Kyle Kollman, Dollar General’s regional director. “We hope our support helps lay the educational groundwork and shapes generations of Alpine students into the leaders in their school district and beyond.”

Wednesday’s donation was part of Dollar General’s Reading Revolution program, which aims to provide schools with additional funding to purchase books, technology programs, computers and other educational tools to enhance reading and literacy programs.

Representatives from Alpine Schools show their surprise and delight after opening the box containing a $50,000 check.“Dollar General is excited to help kick off the second half of the school year with funds to support Alpine schools’ literacy programs,” said Denine Torr, Dollar General’s vice president corporate social responsibility and philanthropy. “As ardent supporters of literacy, we hope this contribution helps provide more educational opportunities for the students of the Alpine community.”

Since its inception in 2013, the Reading Revolution program has provided more than $4.1 million to schools.
