The Dollar General Literacy Foundation Supports Schools and Organizations with $3 Million in Grants

Grants Bring the Foundation’s 2010 Funding for Literacy and Education Initiatives to More Than $10.5 Million
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (BUSINESS WIRE), August 23, 2010 - Today, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced that it has awarded more than $3 million to 812 schools and nonprofit organizations. The Back-to-School and Youth Literacy grants support literacy and reading programs for young people throughout Dollar General’s 35-state market area.
“Grasping the fundamentals of reading at an early age is critical to a successful education,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support schools and organizations that help young people get a head start on their education with solid reading skills.”
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded 401 grants to schools to fund programs, equipment, materials or software for their library or literacy program. Grants were awarded to 411 schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations to implement or expand literacy programs. These grants are in addition to the 531 grants totaling more than $7.5 million that the Foundation has already awarded this year.
