For retired horse trainer Charlie Bourque, this was no ordinary shopping trip to his favorite Dollar General. This morning, on the eve of a new year, Charlie was prepared to bring home something he never dreamed possible.
$1 million. Or $10,000. One of those prizes was his.
An oversized check in the parking lot of the North Chester Street Dollar General store held the potentially life-changing number. As a winner in Dollar General's Shop 'N Win Millionaire Sweepstakes, all Charlie had to do was unveil it.
As a nervous crowd looked on and with cameras rolling, Charlie began uncovering digits on the oversized check, starting at the decimal and moving left. He quickly uncovered four zeroes. Then, after a long pause, Charlie uncovered a fifth "0." The crowd erupted in applause.
"I still have the jitters! It still doesn't seem real to me," Charlie said. "I have never won anything like this in my life. It will change my life, but I'll still be Charlie."
Charlie has made tentative plans for how he'll spend his prize.
"I'd like to buy a house and some land, help my sister and donate some of it to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital," said Charlie, who buys cleaning supplies, pet food and his favorite pair of pants at Dollar General. Employees at the North Chester Street store, where his winning purchase was made, will be rewarded with a party, and each employee will receive $1,000.
Charlie's entry was randomly chosen from more than 1.7 million entries received for the Dollar General Shop 'N Win Millionaire Sweepstakes. The promotion's weekly prizes included diamond tennis bracelets, TVs and gift cards. The Dollar General "Shop 'N Win Millionaire" sweepstakes ran from Sept. 28 to Dec. 15, 2008.
