July is National Baked Bean Month

Jul 20, 2017

Dollar General has everything customers need to celebrate National Baked Bean Month this July. Whether they are soaked, cooked dry or scooped from a can, there are seemingly endless ways to enjoy the tasty dish all month long.

For a unique spin on a traditional meal, add baked beans as a side option to next family breakfast. Or, add a protein-packed scoop of baked beans to a thick slice of bread for an afternoon snack and garnish with barbecue sauce or cheese and season to taste.

Baked beans are the perfect side dish for backyard barbecues or tailgating season. Brown sugar, ketchup, bacon and mustard are just a few of the ingredients needed to ensure everyone goes back for seconds.

Cooking baked beans over a fire is always a convenient and tasty camping tradition for camping in the great outdoors or “glamping” in the backyard. Consider browning canned or fresh meat to elevate the dish from a side to an entree.

Stovetop Baked Beans
Ingredients:
  • 2 slices bacon, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 (15-oz.) can of pork and beans
  • 1/4 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp. spicy brown mustard

Cook bacon in medium saucepan over medium-high heat 4 minutes or until crisp, stirring occasionally.

Add onion; cook 2 minutes more or until tender. Stir in beans, ketchup and mustard; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; simmer 10 minutes or until sauce thickens, stirring occasionally.
