How Dollar General is investing in career development programs

Dollar General believes its greatest strength lies in its diverse workforce. As a growing retailer, DG creates new jobs and opportunities for personal and professional development and, ultimately, career advancement across its more than 20,000 retail locations, distribution centers, private fleet and corporate offices. To position employees for success, the Company offers a variety of professional development and learning programs and opportunities.

Building a long-term career at DG is key to the Company’s efforts to attract and retain talent and the award-winning training and development programs have helped employees grow through DG’s ranks. DG's robust internal promotion pipeline is evidenced by nearly 74% of employees at or above the lead sales position being placed from within and approximately 40% of internally placed store managers started as part-time sales associates.

“Employees are at the heart of DG, and their personal and professional success drives our commitment to creating an inclusive environment that provides support and development opportunities,” said Kathy Reardon, executive vice president and chief people officer at Dollar General.

As such, DG is proud to be recognized with a Ragan’s 2024 Workplace Wellness Award for its training and development programs that support career growth. Along with these programs, DG also provides educational benefits for employees and their immediate families, encouraging and supporting growth from every angle, including zero-cost college courses and degrees, tuition reimbursement and scholarships.

To celebrate the recognition, DG is spotlighting a few employees and their pathways to success!

Jenniffer V.
Jenniffer

Jenniffer V., a store manager in Hastings, Florida, joined DG as a sales associate in 2004. Over the last 19+ years, she’s learned from her mentors to become a better store manager, bringing her expertise to many stores across Florida. To help Jenniffer achieve her next goal of becoming a district manager (DM), she recently graduated from DG’s Store Manager Ladder – a year-long program to help prepare leaders for responsibility of more than just one store location.

“It's a really good program as an introduction to managing multiple locations,” said Jenniffer. “You're used to thinking about the employees in your store, not the store managers and all their employees. It's a nice program to get involved with other store managers and just learn about what to expect if you want to become a DM.”

Montana B.
Montana

Montana B., a licensing senior coordinator, started her DG journey eight years ago as a sales associate in Thaxton, Mississippi while pursuing her journalism degree at the University of Mississippi. Over the next several years, she grew her retail career, becoming lead sales associate, assistant store manager, and then store manager. In 2020, Montana was considering transferring to a store in Nashville, Tennessee, but with encouragement from her district manager, decided to take a chance and apply for a business-focused role at the Company’s corporate headquarters. Today, Montana is taking advantage of DG’s zero-cost degree program to help gain added business knowledge to further grow in the tax licensing department.

“I loved learning about DG’s mission of Serving Others, which for me, emphasizes improving the quality of life for those around you with every action. I took those learnings and translated them into a cohesive voice and tone for the content I helped publish.”

“I'm going back to school through Strayer to earn a business degree to expand my foundation I know I need to progress,” said Montana. “With every position at Dollar General, if you have a growth mindset, you have almost everything you need to succeed and grow within the Company. It's definitely about having positivity of learning.”

Brandi

Regional Director Brandi P. has been Serving Others since 2001. After graduating high school, Brandi’s applied for a job at her local DG in Jacksonville, Florida and began her first role as a sales associate. Juggling college classes and work simultaneously, Brandi decided to apply for the Turner Family Scholarship, through which she was awarded funds to help with college expenses. Since graduating, Brandi has continued growing her career with DG.

“Anytime I've asked for something or wanted to develop in something more, I've always been given that opportunity, which is nice,” said Brandi. “There are so many different things Dollar General offers to make you love what you do.”
