Employees can further their career path with education opportunities at DG
Dollar General believes in offering opportunities for employees interested in pursuing educational goals. Beyond tuition reimbursement and assistance, the Company is proud to provide access to flexible development programs. For example, DG store managers who complete the Company’s Store Manager Training program are eligible to receive credit hours toward the completion of an undergraduate degree after an evaluation by the American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT®). In addition, DG employees can begin or resume their higher education journey through online platforms, which streamline the education benefits process and give learners more control over their development while making it easier and more affordable to go back to school.
Here are a few stories of employees who have taken advantage of educational opportunities to help them excel in the workplace:
Maurice B's Story
After encouragement from his supervisor, Jonesville Distribution Center (DC) Assistant Director Maurice B. decided to take the leap and return to school, pursuing a degree in business administration at no cost to him thanks to DG’s education benefits.
Now a year into his degree, Maurice is a recognized President’s List Scholar through Strayer University, working towards a career in DG’s Human Resources Department and inspiring his two daughters along the way.
“By changing fields, it’s opened me up to other opportunities that I would not have seen without going back to school. Once I get my BBA, it will help me maximize my potential and create a better way of life for my family." said Maurice B.
Maurice knows first-hand the value of DG’s education benefits and encourages others – such as his colleague Laporshia M. – to utilize the Company’s resources as well.
Laporshia M.'s Story
Laporshia M., a supervisor at DG’s Jonesville DC, earned her associate degree in art in 2015, and was eager to continue her personal and professional development.
After learning about DG’s educational opportunities from Maurice, she enrolled in courses to earn an associate degree in business administration. “I want to be able to move up and have a degree standing behind me when I do it,” she shared.
Taking online, self-paced courses allows Laporshia to balance her studies, her career and her sons' schedules, including their busy football season. “I appreciate Dollar General because of the work life balance, allowing me to do what I need to do for my family and myself while still holding a career.”
Laporshia recently celebrated her tenth year with DG. And while she is three credits away from graduating, she already has plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree with a goal of becoming a supervisor or human resource officer in the years to come, leveraging her education to advance her career.
