Here for What Matters in Screven, Georgia

Aug 01, 2024

In rural southeast Georgia lies Screven, a Wayne County community with approximately 800 residents who previously had to drive outside their community to access affordable fresh foods. On Saturday, June 29, DG celebrated our new DG Market grand opening with our Screven neighbors and numerous elected officials including U.S. Representative Buddy Carter; former U.S. Representative Lindsey Thomas; Georgia State Representative Steven Meeks; Screven Mayor Jason Weaver and numerous Screven City Council members.

The morning’s event began with remarks from elected officials before the first 50 customers received $10 complimentary gift cards and the first 100 customers received DG tote bags with product samples.

“This is going to change this community, and we want to thank Dollar General for more investment in our community. This will change people’s lives,” said U.S. Representative Buddy Carter.

To further commemorate the opening and the Company’s commitment to serving the Screven community, Dollar General and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation surprised Screven Elementary School principal Jason Brown with 100 new books and a surprise donation to Screven Elementary School.

“As we move around rural America and rural Georgia in particular, if there’s one brand that you can see having a true commitment to rural communities, it’s Dollar General,” said Georgia Representative Steven Meeks. “About 80% of Dollar General stores are in communities of 20,000 or less, and that is a commitment to rural America.”

DG Market formats offer expanded produce, refrigerated and frozen food offerings, dairy products and more, in addition to an assortment of fresh meats, alongside the general merchandise customers trust Dollar General to provide. The Company’s fresh produce offering includes a curated assortment of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, apples, strawberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, limes, salad mixes, and more. DG’s produce set offers the top 20 items typically sold in traditional grocery stores and covers approximately 80% of produce categories most grocery stores carry.

While DG is not a grocer, the Company cares about and is invested in the health of its hometown communities. As of March 2024, DG currently has fresh produce in more than 5,400 stores, giving the Company more individual points of produce distribution than any other U.S. mass retailer or grocer.
