Company Responds to America’s Youngest Mayor to Provide Fresh Food in Rural Arkansas

When it comes to answering the call from our hometowns seeking additional support, Dollar General has a proven track record of response. Further highlighting DG’s commitment to its mission of Serving Others, the Company recently opened its newest DG Market in Earle, Arkansas following a request by America’s youngest mayor, 19-year-old Jaylen Smith, for fresh food offerings in his community.

With a population less than 2,000, Earle is a rural community that previously lacked convenient access to affordable fresh food, which forced residents to drive miles out of town to purchase meat and produce. Dollar General’s recently relocated and updated DG Market store in Earle now provides nearby and affordable access to fresh meat and produce for Crittenden County neighbors.

"We are pleased with our partnership with Dollar General and thank them for opening up a DG Market within the City of Earle," said Mayor Jaylen Smith.

The Earle DG Market store now offers expanded produce, refrigerated and frozen food offerings, dairy products and more, in addition to an assortment of fresh meats, alongside the general merchandise customers trust Dollar General to provide.  The Company recently celebrated the opening with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Smith, Earle City Council members and the DG team.

“Earle is a food desert, so we have to travel all the way to West Memphis to even get fresh products, so this is amazing,” said Demetris Johnson, Earle City Council Member.

DG currently has fresh produce in more than 5,400 stores, giving the Company more individual points of produce distribution than any other U.S. mass retailer or grocer.  DG also plans to add produce in approximately 1,500 additional stores in fiscal 2024.

Every Dollar General store across the country, regardless of format, offers components of a nutritious meal including proteins, grains, dairy, frozen and canned vegetables, canned fruits and more. Additionally, we’ve also developed Better For You resources that include recipes to create healthier meals from products sourced primarily from DG to further help customers make healthier decisions while shopping at our stores.
