DG Honors Hot Springs’ Lucky the Dog with Donations to Local Animal Shelter, Libraries

In July 2023, Dollar General shared the story
about a dog named Lucky who was known for wandering into his neighborhood DG in Hot Springs, Arkansas, making people smile with his adventurous personality. Upon Lucky’s recent passing, his family reached out to DG to explore collaborating on something special to remember Lucky’s legacy within the Garland County community.

In honor of Lucky and in support of the community, DG invited the Cangelosi family to join them for a surprise presentation of a $5,000 donation to the Humane Society of Garland County (HSGC), a no kill, nonprofit shelter dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals in Hot Springs.

“Our family is so thankful not only for the support of our community, but for helping us preserve and share the sweet memories of Lucky,” said Tanner Cangelosi, Lucky’s mom. “Our son, Judah, who wrote the book, loves animal shelters and is so excited to be a part of this unique way to honor Lucky while helping other animals in need.”

Additionally, since Lucky loved to stop by DG where the store team would often shower him with love, toys and treats, his family also visited the Hot Springs store to help the store team pick out $500 in supplies from the shelter’s wish list, donated by DG. With the help of DG’s store team – including Lucky’s favorite employee, Store Manager Judy – they grabbed some of Lucky’s favorite items, including Forever Pals toys and Heartland Farms treats, to deliver to the shelter.

To further help Lucky’s story live on, DG also commissioned 15 copies of Luckius Maximus, a book created by the Cangelosi family (authored by Judah and illustrated by Tanner) capturing Lucky’s adventurous spirit and chronicling his DG escapades. The family plans to deliver a book to each Garland County elementary school as well as the Garland County Public Library for their collections.

While Lucky will certainly be missed, Dollar General hopes that his adventures in Hot Springs will continue to bring joy to local families.
