DG Announces 15.2M+ Pounds of Food Donations in 2023, Equating to More Than 12 Million Meals

At Dollar General, our philanthropic efforts focus on helping individuals meet their basic needs, which includes the
44 million Americans who are currently food insecure. In the third year of its Feeding America® partnership, DG is proud to announce it donated more than 15.2 million pounds of food in 2023 to local food banks from Dollar General stores and distribution centers. The donations equate to more than 12 million meals to individuals needing access to nourishing foods for their families.

This past year, the Company donated to 112 food banks in 37 states. In celebration of this collective effort, we’ve spotlighted three of our partners and their community impact:

OKLAHOMA: Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma

In 2023, DG donated more than 421,000 pounds of product to the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma to help support its 24-county service area.

“Food insecurity continues to impact over half a million Oklahomans each year,” said Jeff Marlow, president and CEO of the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. “One in seven Oklahomans are facing hunger. The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is grateful to work with partners like Dollar General so we can make a significant and immediate difference in the lives of families and individuals in need. Thank you, Dollar General, for making a difference for thousands of Oklahomans facing hunger.”

Working with 227 nearby Dollar General stores, the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma has received more than 889,000 pounds of food from DG since the Company announced its formal partnership with Feeding America in 2021. Additionally, through its Feeding America partnership, DG also provided a $100,000 donation that assists the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma in helping its nearly 600 partners change the lives of struggling neighbors.

TEXAS: San Antonio Food Bank

Dollar General provided more than 2 million pounds of donations to Texas food banks last year, including more than 415,000 pounds to the San Antonio Food Bank. Founded in 1980, the San Antonio Food Bank supports a large portion of Southwest Texas, serving 105,000 individuals weekly and distributing 74 million meals each year.

"The San Antonio Food Bank is proud to partner with Dollar General in the fight against hunger. Over the past two years, Dollar General has donated funds that provided 154,000 meals to our community,” said Eric Cooper, CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank.

In fall 2023, the food bank was also the recipient of a $1,000 donation through the Company’s DG Kindness campaign in recognition of 20 DG employees who volunteered to help prepare meal boxes for the local community.

"Dollar General's efforts to offer healthy and nutritious food options, in areas often underserved by traditional grocery retailers, is a testament to their commitment to serve as a beacon of hope in the face of food insecurity. We are grateful to have Dollar General on our team,” said Cooper.

KENTUCKY: Dare to Care

Kentucky received the most donations from DG stores and its three distribution centers in the state in 2023, reaching nearly 2.3 million pounds. Of that, nearly 120,000 pounds of product were donated to Dare to Care, a regional food bank that services 13 counties in the Louisville area including portions of Southern Indiana.

Dare to Care helps the DG team build comradery within the community by coordinating weekly donation pickups and deliveries in Louisville and the surrounding counties.

“DG is no stranger to the community. Our many partners and volunteers who benefit from the donations we receive have gotten to know their local DG teams and see them on a weekly basis,” said Denise Densford, Dare to Care food sourcing manager. “We’re serving and existing in the same community so it’s really neat to see all the synergies when it comes together.”

Since its partnership began in 2021, Dollar General has donated more than $3 million to Feeding America, including a July 2023 $1 million grant, alongside in-kind donations that equate to more than 24 million meals. On average, DG stores and distribution centers donated more than 1.25 million pounds of food, equivalent to more than 1 million meals, each month in 2023.
