Spotlighting Stories of Furry Friends
It’s National Dog Month and what better way to celebrate our furry friends than by spotlighting a few favorite stories of our team, customers and communities supporting man’s best friend!
Hello, Dolly!
Dollar General customer Ray B. of Polk County, Florida was shopping at his local store in Auburndale when he spotted a small pup playfully browsing the aisles.
“She was in such a good mood. She was popping around the corner smiling and wiggling and jumping on everybody all happy,” said Ray.
After talking to DG staff, it was determined the pooch was likely a stray. Ray contacted animal control and was asked to keep the dog until the next day. After accompanying Ray on the remainder of his shopping trip, the duo went home where it became clear to Ray that’s where the dog was meant to be.
“She just crawled up on my shoulder and she let out a sigh like, ‘That’s it. I’m done. I’m tired. I’m home.’”
As the dog underwent required evaluations and a hold period at the animal shelter, Ray would visit often until the day came when he could take ‘Dolly (General)’ home!
“She fits right in. It feels like she’s always been here.”
Ray and Dolly’s story has since gone viral, and Ray continues to share her fun antics and their activities together on social media.
Dollar General connected with Ray and sent Dolly a box of goodies to thank him for giving her a home and sharing the love.
Other Favorite Pup Stories
If you’ve been following DG on social media for a while, you may remember some of our pet adoption stories. But in case you missed them – here are a few faves!
After repeatedly trying to steal a purple unicorn toy from a Dollar General store, Duplin County Animal Services was contacted for assistance with the thief, a lab-mix stray.
Named Sisu by shelter workers (after the dragon in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon), officer Samantha L., who responded to the call, purchased the stuffed unicorn before bringing Sisu back to the shelter to be transferred to a lab rescue facility for training and adoption.
When DG Store Manager John S. arrived to work one cold February morning, he was surprised to find an orphaned pup cowering on the sidewalk.
He helped warm the little guy up, fed him, and, not so long after, found the pup the perfect home.
Pup “Pistol” and now owner Gilbert, a veteran, retired teacher and DG regular, are now loving companions.
When Winn Dixie wandered into her nearby Dollar General, it wasn't treats or toys she was seeking. The DG team soon learned that her owner had passed away and she needed a home. A DG employee, who happened to be filling in that day, offered to adopt her.
"Winn Dixie couldn't have found a better DG to come to that day," said district manager Delinda R. "It was meant to be."
The DG team made Winn Dixie a shirt and name tag before she left to join her new family.
