How Dollar General's Distribution Centers Support Furry Friends
October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and Dollar General (DG) is proud to recognize how its employees are supporting furry friends at their local animal shelters. Take a look at a few of these heartwarming stories:
Janesville, Wisconsin Distribution Center
DG’s Janesville, Wisconsin, Distribution Center (DC) has helped more than 20 pets from the Human Society of Southern Wisconsin find their forever homes, sponsoring the adoption of one shelter animal every month.
To raise sponsorship funds, the Janesville DC hosts employee fundraisers, like its annual “Nachos for Gatos, Nachos for Perritos” event, selling nachos to employees with proceeds covering the sponsorships of pet adoptions.
“We’re always looking for ways to give back to the Janesville community, and sponsoring a pet each month is a great way to spread our support while helping to promote the many pets who are in need of a loving home. It’s a cause our employees get excited to be a part of, too,” said Justin Eggers, HR generalist at Janesville.
For its efforts, the DC has been recognized as a “Pet Spotlight Partner” for the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin.
Walton, Kentucky Distribution Center
In honor of National Pet Month in May, DG’s Walton, Kentucky, DC celebrated its four-legged friends by hosting a pet photo contest fundraiser. The DC challenged employees to submit their own pet photos, and employees could vote for their favorites by putting quarters in the pets’ donation cups – all of which were donated to the Boone County Animal Shelter. With 22 contest entrants, the DC raised over $300 for the local shelter while the favorite pets received a prize of treats and toys to enjoy.
Bethel, Pennsylvania Distribution Center
In Bethel, Pennsylvania, the DG DC has become a valued partner of the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA in Pine Grove, donating food, treats, pet beds, blankets, paper towels and cleaning supplies every two weeks. And when the shelter reached out to the DC last year with a need for additional supplies, DG was ready to answer the call.
Eager to support their furry friends, Bethel employees set up a donation bin, coming together to donate additional items to aid the shelter. “Through my experience with Dollar General, we receive a lot of products like cleaning supplies, food, toys, even some outfits. To not have those supplies would be detrimental to us, and it is nice to have a reliable donor like DG,” said Lilly Barra, Assistant Shelter Manager at Ruth Steiner Memorial SPCA. “The items we receive are used almost immediately, and it is a relief knowing that we have a designated location that regularly contributes and helps us out.”
The love doesn’t stop there. In addition to its efforts with the SPCA, the DC also donates to Paws For A Cause in Pleasantville every week, sending various products to support the non-profit.
Zanesville, Ohio Distribution Center
The Zanesville, Ohio, DC is proud to partner with 12 local shelters to support animal welfare in its community. For over fourteen years, the DC has supported area shelters including the Coshocton Animal Shelter, Cambridge Humane Society, Hoofs, Perry County Dog Shelter and Muskingum Animal Shelter, amid new partnerships with five additional shelters in more recent years.
Throughout its efforts, the Zanesville DC has donated more than $375,000 worth of products to help their local furry friends.
