How Dollar General Grows and Invests in Talent from the Ground Up

As a growing retailer, Dollar General continues to create new opportunities for personal and professional growth, and ultimately, career advancement. DG believes the opportunity to develop a career with a growing and purpose-driven company is a unique competitive advantage and remains the Company’s greatest currency in attracting and retaining talent.

Each summer, Dollar General sponsors a robust, paid, 10-week internship program that offers practical, real-world, hands-on experience to college students. Opportunities within human resources, supply chain, technology, communications, marketing, finance, merchandising and more provide students with leadership and operational skills, job shadowing, professional development, mentorship with structured feedback, networking with senior leaders across the company, team outings, volunteer opportunities and more. In addition to the structured summer program, select departments offer internships throughout the year.

This National Internship Awareness Month, Dollar General is spotlighting a few current and former interns on their path to success!

From Finance Student to Full Time
Elise

Elise M., a native of Hardinsburg, Kentucky, first heard about DG’s internship program from a college classmate at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. “We only have two stoplights in my rural, agriculturally based hometown, but several Dollar General stores. I knew DG and how they give back to my community.”

She joined the Human Resources department’s talent acquisition team in January 2023, and that summer, Elise accepted a second internship working with financials on the technology team.

“It was an area more closely related to my degree. I love my team – they even attended my college graduation in December where they presented me with a card containing a full-time job offer.”

Elise joined DG full-time in January 2024 as a financial analyst, but prior to that, had the opportunity to pay it forward, training another intern while in the HR department. That intern has since graduated and now also works for DG full-time.

"Dollar General is an amazing family to be a part of. Everyone is super supportive, and they grow you as a businessperson and as an individual. My internship helped me become a become a better person in general and I loved the program."

Promoting Through PR and Media
Nick

Also hailing from WKU’s Hilltopper country is Nick F., who will begin his second summer internship with Dollar General in May. A Junior from Gallatin, Tennessee majoring in advertising and public relations (PR), Nick first learned about DG’s internship opportunities through a professor at the university, quickly applying for and securing a role with DGPR. In his role, Nick helped develop customer and media-facing content, from blogs to social media posts.

“I loved learning about DG’s mission of Serving Others, which for me, emphasizes improving the quality of life for those around you with every action. I took those learnings and translated them into a cohesive voice and tone for the content I helped publish.”

Nick enjoyed his internship so much he began pursuing another internship at DG to gain even more experience – landing a role with the DG Media Network. Nick hopes to use skills he has developed at WKU’s College Heights Herald as an account executive in his new role on the DGMN Ad Sales team.

“I’m very excited to be returning to Dollar General this summer. DG really emphasized professional development and gave us so many opportunities to grow and learn from a wide array of individuals and departments. Everyone was so committed to building a welcoming environment, all the way up to senior leadership. Everyone valued us and wanted to see us succeed. I can’t wait to get started again this summer!”
