Healthier Ideas for Sweet Valentine’s Day Desserts

Feb 10, 2020

This Valentine’s Day, Dollar General can help you find delicious and healthier treats to help you celebrate whether you are looking to try something new or satisfy a sweet tooth while sticking to something better for you.

If your local Dollar General offers frozen fruits, consider using them for the base of a tasty dessert. Combine a package of frozen raspberries and with a cup of your favorite low-sugar yogurt then blend in a blender or food processor. Add additional ingredients like lemon juice, honey and other frozen berries to give it a twist. Freeze for three to four hours, or overnight, then serve as a tart dessert to your favorite Valentine’s Day meal. Melt ½ cup of dark chocolate morsels with one tablespoon of coconut oil for a homemade, better for you chocolate shell topping.

For strawberry fans, create your own chocolate covered strawberries using one cup of dark chocolate morsels and three tablespoons of coconut oil. Add your own toppings to the strawberries before cooling. Consider heart healthy toppings like chopped walnuts. Dip and let the strawberries chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate sets. For a simple strawberry dessert, cut up the fruit and blend heavy whipping cream until the peaks are stiff. Consider adding half a teaspoon of vanilla extract for each half cup of heavy whipping cream.

Consider making swapping out ingredients like butter, margarine or oil in baked goods with healthier alternatives like applesauce or plain yogurt. For best taste, consider replacing half of the called-for butter with your chosen substitute.

Dollar General wishes you a very happy (and tasty) Valentine’s Day!
