Aug 15, 2016

Dollar General celebrated the official grand opening of the company’s 13,000th store on August 13, 2016 in Birmingham, Alabama. The store’s opening marks another major milestone for the company founded 77 years ago in rural Kentucky.

“The 13,000th store grand opening celebration commemorates a major milestone for Dollar General and reflects our unwavering commitment and dedication to provide convenience and everyday low prices to the communities we serve,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO.  “On behalf of the entire Dollar General leadership team, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dollar General employees, our communities, local governments and business partners who continually support our mission of Serving Others as we look to deliver the Dollar General business model to communities across the country.”

Located at 4132 Jefferson Avenue Southwest in Birmingham, grand opening festivities continued throughout the day as visitors enjoyed seeing the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry NASCAR showcar. The first 200 adult customers who visited the store also received a $10 gift card, in addition to goodie bags.

To further commemorate the milestone, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation presented a $13,000 donation to two area organizations with the Birmingham Public Library’s Powderly Brand and Oxmoor Valley Elementary School each receiving $6,500 to further literacy and education.

Dollar General proudly employs more than 6,500 employees in Alabama through approximately 675 stores and its distribution center in Bessemer, which opened in 2012.
