Dollar General Reports Increased February Sales

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn., Mar 7, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG) today reported total retail sales for the four-week period ended March 1, 2002, equaled $428.4 million compared with $367.2 million last year, an increase of 16.7 percent. Same-store sales for the February period increased 7.7 percent compared with a 4.7 percent increase in the February period of 2001. The estimated average customer purchase in February was $8.31, an increase of 1.2%. Customer transactions in same-stores are estimated to have increased 7%.

March Sales Outlook:
For the five-week period ending April 5, 2002, the Company expects total sales to increase 14-16 percent. Same-store sales are expected to increase 5-7 percent compared with a same-store sales increase of 6.5 percent in the March period last year. March sales results will be released on Thursday, April 11, 2002.
