Dollar General Remains Committed to Serving Kings Road Community
Aug 16, 2024
Nearly one year following the tragedy at our Kings Road store in Jacksonville, Florida, our commitment to and continued engagement in the local community remains strong.
“As a proud member of the Jacksonville community, Dollar General is focused on investing in programs and initiatives that help to build a brighter tomorrow,” said Denine Torr, Dollar General’s vice president of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy. “Dollar General will continue to collaborate with community members and leaders on how best to serve and support the Kings Road community.”
During the last year, our support and donations have focused on revitalization efforts, education, unity, mental health and hunger relief across Jacksonville through a charitable commitment of more than $2.5 million. We also partnered with the local food bank to provide approximately 400 Thanksgiving meals and additional products during food distribution events.
In January 2024, after months of conversations with employees and the community, we reopened our Kings Road store with a completely renovated and remodeled design offering fresh produce and additional food options. We installed a permanent plaque on the entrance to the store to recognize the lives lost and how the community gathered to be #JacksonvilleStrong.
Additionally, Dollar General is proud to be the first Edward Waters University corporate sponsor to offer scholarships to specifically benefit the students in the New Town, Grand Park and greater Kings Road community which will continue for the next five years.
As we look forward to continued healing, we remain committed to serving Jacksonville, as we have for nearly 40 years. Our ongoing support includes an additional $200,000 to local non-profit organizations in August 2024. Professional counseling services remain available to our employees through the EAP.
The Kings Road store will close at Noon on Sunday, August 25th and remain closed all day Monday, August 26th. The store will open to serve customers on Tuesday, August 27th under normal operating hours.
