Dollar General Nominates J. Neal Purcell, Former KPMG, LLP Vice Chairman, to Board of Directors

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn., April 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG) announced today that its Board of Directors has nominated J. Neal Purcell, retired partner of KPMG, LLP, for election to the Board at the Company's May 25th Annual Shareholders' meeting in Tennessee.
Mr. Purcell served on KPMG's Board of Directors and its Management Committee. From October 1998 until his retirement in January 2002, he served as vice chairman in charge of the firm's national audit practice - operations. Prior to that, he served as area managing partner for the Southeast region. He is currently on the board and chairman of the audit committee for Southern Company in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also on the boards of Synovus Financial Corporation in Columbus, Georgia and Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California.
A native of Ballground, Georgia, Mr. Purcell graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and is a charter member of the Goizueta Business School Advisory Board there. He is on the Emory Board of Trustees, serving on its finance and investment committees and chairing the committee on executive compensation.

In addition to his extensive business and board efforts, Mr. Purcell has been very involved in charitable and community efforts in Atlanta. He chaired the 1998 United Way Campaign of Metropolitan Atlanta. He has also chaired the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Metropolitan Atlanta Salvation Army Board of Advisors and is the President-Elect of the Atlanta Rotary Club. He currently lives in Duluth, Georgia, with his wife Martha. They have two daughters and seven grandchildren.
If Dollar General shareholders elect Mr. Purcell to the Board at the May 25th meeting, he will begin serving on the board immediately. On May 25th, two of the Company's current Board members, John B. Holland and William S. Wire, II, will retire from the board because of mandatory retirement rules.
