Dollar General Names Greg Sparks EVP of Store Operations

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (BUSINESS WIRE), March 14, 2012 - Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG) today announced that Gregory (Greg) A. Sparks has been named executive vice president – store operations, effective March 19, 2012, reporting to Chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling. Sparks will assume all responsibilities for the operations of more than 9,900 retail stores in 38 states. In addition, Sparks will serve on the Company’s real estate and store development committee.

Sparks, age 51, most recently served as division president, Seattle division, for Safeway, a role he has held since 2001. Sparks has 36 years of retail experience including a 34-year career with Safeway where he held roles of increasing responsibility including merchandising manager, category manager, divisional director of merchandising, grocery and general merchandise and divisional vice president of marketing.

“Greg is a proven leader with a breadth of retail experience across both operations and merchandising. Given that I have known Greg for 20 years and have had the opportunity to follow his career during this time, I believe Greg will be a great addition to Dollar General and help take our business to new levels of success,” said Dreiling.

Sparks received a B.S. in Management from Phillips University and his M.B.A. from The University of Phoenix. He is a board member of the Western Association of Food Chains and the Northwest Grocers Association.
