Middle Tennessee School Surprised with $50,000 Literacy Grant and Donations to Students and Staff
In celebration of today’s National Read a Book Day, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) and Mondelez hosted Read with Ritz at Alex Green Elementary School in Whites Creek, Tennessee. The event included a surprise $50,000 donation from Dollar General’s Reading Revolution program, as well as giveaways to students and staff.
“The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to partner with Mondelez to support and enhance Alex Green’s current literacy programs and show our gratitude to the school’s educators and staff,” shared Denine Torr, executive director of the DGLF. “Through this event, we hope to spread joy and encourage the love of reading, as well as show our appreciation to the teachers and staff for their efforts to enhance literacy programming for middle Tennessee youth.”
The surprise $50,000 Reading Revolution donation may be used to purchase books, technology programs, computers and/or other education supplies or resources needed to advance literacy gains. Dollar General has awarded more than $4.8 million to 130 schools and literacy-focused non-profit organizations since the program’s inception in 2013.
Additional donations at the event included Mondelez snacks, a backpack and a new book for every student. All teachers and staff received DG gift cards for supplies and materials.
Alex Green Elementary School was identified for the event and donations through the help of the PENCIL Foundation, a long-time partner of the DGLF and champion of literacy initiatives in the Nashville community.
Mondelez also recently donated $100,000 to the DGLF to support its efforts to advance literacy and education across the country.
