Customers Invited to Share Videos about their Military Heroes on Dollar General’s Website

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Throughout June, Dollar General will celebrate and honor members of the military - our true American heroes - as part of its year-long “Every Day Heroes” campaign.

“At Dollar General, we value the experiences of military members, veterans and their families and offer many career opportunities for them”

.In celebration of military everywhere, Dollar General will offer customers the opportunity to upload a video explaining why their own military hero is an “Every Day Hero.” Videos can be submitted and viewed at www.dollargeneral.com/everydayheroes.

In partnership with Procter & Gamble® (P&G), Dollar General will feature Mark Altman, an inspirational Army combat veteran, husband and father of four, in a campaign thanking the nation’s military in communities served by Dollar General. As part of the campaign, Altman will be featured on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in June.

“Mark exemplifies the Dollar General ‘Every Day Hero’ not just through his bravery and military service, but through his commitment to community,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief merchandising officer. “Since returning from his military service, Mark has emerged as a man dedicated to serving his community and helping others.”

Altman gives back by volunteering as a speaker at local schools, sharing his military experiences. He also encourages families to get outside and enjoy outdoor activities together.

“Because of my military service, I had the opportunity to pursue my education,” Altman said. “I’m so proud to be pursuing my PhD in leadership and the fact that I can now use my education to help people in my community and people around the country,” said Altman.

“At Dollar General, we value the experiences of military members, veterans and their families and offer many career opportunities for them,” said Vasos. “We appreciate the attributes members of the military community bring to Dollar General, which mirror our focus on serving others.”

Dollar General is the winner of the 2011 Military Officers Association of America Distinguished Service Award and was recognized in GI Jobs magazine’s list of Most Military Friendly Employers. In 2010, Dollar General received the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, which is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their support of employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
