Dollar General Enters Second Year of NASCAR, with New Kevin Harvick Team; Rookie Burney Lamar Will Drive No. 77 Dollar General Car in 2006 Busch Series
November 04, 2005
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn., Nov 04, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Dollar General (NYSE: DG) today announced that it will sponsor Kevin Harvick Inc.'s No.77 car, driven by rising star Burney Lamar, in the 2006 Busch Series.
Owner Kevin Harvick, who also drives in the Nextel Cup Series, is among the most popular figures in NASCAR. He handpicked and mentored Lamar, a contender for this year's NASCAR AutoZone Elite Series - Southwest Division championship. Lamar is considered among the top candidates for NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year in 2006.
"We're pleased to announce our partnership with Kevin Harvick, who has established a winning record both as a driver and as a team owner," said Rick McNeely, Dollar General vice president of merchandising. "Many of our customers and employees are already NASCAR fans, and we believe they'll be enthusiastic fans of Burney Lamar, one of NASCAR's most-talked-about, up-and-coming young drivers."
The news comes as Dollar General finishes its debut season in NASCAR, which included a customer sweepstakes and the inaugural Dollar General 300 race at Lowe's Motor Speedway last month.
"Dollar General and Kevin Harvick Inc. share the same visions of growth and success," said Kevin Harvick, owner and CEO of Kevin Harvick Inc. "We're pleased with the progress and potential that Burney Lamar has shown this year. Burney and Dollar General will make a great combination on and off the track as Burney makes his way towards Rookie-of-the-Year in 2006."
As a part of the new collaboration, Harvick, along with fellow Nextel Cup Series driver Tony Stewart, will share driving responsibilities in an additional Dollar General car (No.33) in four selected Busch Series races in 2006.
