Dollar General Distribution Center Supports Education In Bessemer

New distribution center affirms commitment to community with $50,000 gift to schools and library

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (April 30, 2012) – Dollar General presented more than $50,000 in grants to Bessemer schools and organizations during its open house celebration on Saturday. The gifts mark the new distribution center’s opening and its dedication to the community.
 
“Dollar General is investing in Bessemer, the home of our newest distribution center,” said Jerry Ferfes, distribution center manager. “As part of our open house celebration, our gift to Bessemer reinforces our mission to serve others by giving back to the community and helping it grow.”
 
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation presented $5,000 to the Bessemer Public Library and $5,000 to Lawson State Community College, Bessemer Campus.
 
Dollar General also launched the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program for 10 schools in the Bessemer area. An investment of more than $40,000, the gift will provide three free books to students this year. The RIF book program will begin at the following schools in the fall: Abrams Elementary, Charles F. Hard Elementary, Concord Elementary, Greenwood Elementary (6015 Warrior River Road), Greenwood Elementary (1219 School Road), James A. Davis Middle, Jonesboro Elementary, McAdory Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary and West Hills Elementary.
 
Dollar General’s Bessemer distribution center began operations in February. At full capacity, the facility will employ approximately 650 people and serve more than 1,000 Dollar General stores. Dollar General has 540 stores in Alabama.
