Dollar General Raises More than $1.5 Million for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® Sixth Annual Thanks and Giving® Campaign

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (BUSINESS WIRE), February 16, 2010 - Dollar General Corp. (NYSE: DG) announced today that its customers are helping St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital save the lives of children in communities everywhere by raising more than $1.5 million during the sixth annual Thanks and Giving campaign, a national awareness and fundraising initiative for St. Jude that runs throughout the holiday season.

This is the fourth year that Dollar General has participated in the Thanks and Giving campaign. Dollar General is one of the nation’s most respected businesses that asks customers to “Give thanks for the healthy kids in your life, and give to those who are not,” by making contributions to St. Jude in support of the hospital’s groundbreaking research and lifesaving care.

“We know it’s been a tough year, but cancer can’t wait for the economy to get better. That's why St. Jude is so thankful we can count on Dollar General and their customers to support the lifesaving work of St. Jude through the Thanks and Giving campaign,” said Marlo Thomas, national outreach director, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “Since no child is ever turned away due to a family’s inability to pay, Dollar General’s support was needed this year more than ever. And they continue to be a blessing to the children who have turned to us for hope and a chance for a healthy future.

Over the past four years, Dollar General’s customers have contributed generously to the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign, raising more than $4.7 million for St. Jude.

“The generosity of our customers and their desire to help the children served by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is inspiring,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “We are proud to support the work St. Jude is doing to help children in need.”

Since its inception, St. Jude has developed protocols that helped raise overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent to 80 percent. In addition, St. Jude covers all costs for treatment, travel, food and lodging for each patient and a family member.
