Dollar General Celebrates World Kindness Day

In celebration of World Kindness Day on November 13, Dollar General is highlighting how DG is spreading kindness and living its mission of Serving Others in the Company’s hometown communities.
We are grateful to employees and partners who continue to join us in acts of kindness, generosity, uplifting others and community engagement, which all makes a positive difference in the lives of others.
Recent acts of kindness include:
Partnering with Kellanova to Give Back to a Local School in Gallatin, Tennessee
Dollar General recently partnered with Kellanova to give back to Guild Elementary School in Gallatin, Tennessee. The event included a surprise $50,000 donation from Dollar General’s Reading Revolution program, as well as food donations the school’s Backpack Program, goodie bags with reading inspired gifts and snacks, and nearly 600 books for the library from Kellanova.
The surprise $50,000 Reading Revolution donation may be used to purchase books, technology programs, computers and/or other education supplies or resources needed to advance literacy gains. Dollar General has awarded more than $4.8 million to 130 schools and literacy-focused non-profit organizations since the program’s inception in 2013.
Kellanova’s donation is part of its Better Days Promise strategy, which works to create #BetterDays where people are fed and fulfilled.
Employees Spreading DG Kindness
Ardmore, Oklahoma Distribution Center
DG’s Ardmore, Oklahoma distribution center recently donated more than $2,500 worth of food and funds to support local nonprofit, Food & Resource Center of South-Central Oklahoma (FRCSCO).
"Everyone CAN make a difference for their neighbors in need,” said James Rosson, Executive Director at FRCSCO. “DG does just that, providing food donations, not just during our annual ‘Yes, We Can! Sculpture Contest’ but throughout the year. We appreciate their partnership!”
The donation was part of the organization’s annual event and included a DG Private Fleet sculpture made of nearly 900 pounds of food to help the organization combat hunger in the area which earned the People’s Choice trophy by FRSCO.
Store Manager Liz J. in Detroit, Michigan
With the goal to serve her community and bring together DG team members, Store Manager Liz J. in Detroit, Michigan reached out to her district manager, Tasha A., with a request to bring the district together for a service project with non-profit organization, Focus:Hope.
“I want to make a difference by showing our customers that we care about them,” shared Liz. “This non-profit has a strong reputation in the Detroit area to support families and children in need. Their focus aligns so much with our mission of Serving Others.”
Together, Liz and her team built more than 25 kits filled with hats, gloves, hand warmers, soap, towels, toothbrushes and toothpaste. To honor Liz and her team’s service, DG Kindness awarded $1,000 to Focus:Hope to enhance their efforts.
“Dollar General is important to our community. We are so thankful for Liz and the local team for preparing these kits and are honored to be recognized with a donation,” shared Ashleigh Mitchell, Focus:Hope Corporate Philanthropy Officer.
Partnering with Edgewell Personal Care Company to Award a Local Teacher in Detroit, Michigan
Edgewell Personal Care Company and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) recently announced the winner of its second annual Emerging Artist Contest. Art teacher Anjelica Bascom at Legacy Charter Academy in Detroit, Michigan received a $5,000 prize to support her classroom and individual artistic pursuits. Additionally, Anjelica’s artwork will be featured on limited-edition Schick Intuition® packaging at Dollar General in 2025.
To further support the school, the DGLF and Edgewell collectively donated $15,000 to Legacy Charter Academy and provided DG gift cards to every staff member.
“As an art teacher in an urban environment, I draw inspiration from things that bring me joy. Teaching the next generation of artists is my passion,“ Anjelica shared. “Through my work, I aim to create an inclusive and welcoming space where students feel inspired and empowered to explore their creativity and embrace their unique cultural identities. I’m excited that opportunities like this contest from Edgewell’s Schick Intuition and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation exist and that designs like mine are being supported and amplified.”
This year’s contest called for teachers to submit a feel-good design that communicates the importance of literacy. In 2023, Edgwell and the DGLF awarded student Stephanie Saunders in McFarland, Wisconsin a $10,000 tuition scholarship and featured her design on Schick Intuition Pure Nourishment packaging at Dollar General stores chainwide in summer 2024.
