Dollar General and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Give Back in November

As Dollar General remains an ardent supporter of literacy and education, the Company and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation donated more than $180,000 to local schools in November 2022. Donations were made through the Company’s Reading Revolution program and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s Beyond Words program, which collectively have awarded approximately $7 million since their inceptions.
“In the spirit of Serving Others, Dollar General is proud to provide funding for these schools and support literacy resources for students,” shared Denine Torr, Dollar General’s vice president of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy and executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “At Dollar General, we believe every student deserves access to quality instructional programs that enhance the joy of reading. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these funds make to students and teachers’ ability to inspire their love of reading and literacy."
Reading Revolution
Dollar General recently surprised three schools with a donation of $50,000 each to Benny Bills Elementary School in Gallatin, Tennessee, J.W. Wiseman Elementary School in Portland, Tennessee and Sinai Elementary School in Halifax, Virginia. The donations provide schools with additional funding to purchase books, technology programs, computers and other educational tools to enhance their reading and literacy programs.
Dollar General’s Steve Sunderland (executive vice president of store operations) helped surprise Benny Bills Elementary in Gallatin, Tennessee and also read to students before presenting the donation.

Beyond Words
Dollar General recently awarded two schools in Kentucky with funds from its Beyond Words program. Martha Jane Potter Elementary School in Neon, Kentucky with received $20,000 and Jenkins Independent School in Jenkins, Kentucky with received $10,000. These funds will support each school library replace books lost during August
2022 flooding.
Additionally, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded $6,000 to Washington Elementary STEM School in Kenner, Louisiana to help replace books following Hurricane Ida impacts in 2021.
Since its inception in 2006, the Beyond Words program has awarded more than $2.8 million in grants, impacting more than 117,000 students in 31 states. Grants are available to public schools with a school library located within 15 miles of a Dollar General store or distribution center impacted by natural disaster.
