Dollar General Supports Local Elementary School Through Donations

Company Partners with KPMG to Donate $10,000 to George A. Whitten Elementary; Provide Books, Backpacks Filled with Supplies to 500 Students

Dollar General and KPMG Present a Donation to Whitten Elementary

This week, Dollar General surprised school administrators at George A. Whitten Elementary School in Hendersonville, Tennessee with a $10,000 donation.  Dollar General was also joined by their partners at KPMG LLP to provide 500 students with new backpacks filled with school supplies and a new book for each child to expand their personal library.
 
“We are proud to support the Hendersonville community through our mission of Serving Others to provide funds and resources that will help further George A. Whitten Elementary’s education and literacy initiatives,” said Denine Torr, vice president of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy at Dollar General. “These donations also aim to support students as they continue their learning journey through the summer and gets them prepared with tools for the next school year.”

The goal of our KPMG Family for Literacy program is to eradicate childhood illiteracy by putting new books and educational resources into the hands of children in need and develop the next generation of young leaders through reading,” said Sam Bennett, KPMG Nashville office managing partner. “This was a great opportunity to partner with Dollar General and provide books, backpacks, and school supplies to the amazing students at George A. Whitten Elementary School.”
 
Dollar General and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation have a longstanding history of supporting education initiatives. This month, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced a nearly $9.2 million commitment to literacy in May, including a $1 million donation to fund a Teacher Book Match with Donors Choose plus DGLF grant awards to support family, adult and summer literacy programs. Applications are being accepted through May 19, 2022 for DGLF Youth Literacy Grants, providing funding to schools, public libraries and nonprofits who help students who are below grade level or having trouble reading. Since its inception in 2008, KPMG Family for Literacy (KFFL) program has donated over six million books to children in need across the country. KFFL volunteers participate in book readings, backpack drives, food and supply donations and more.
