Our Purpose and Our People

At Dollar General, we are proud to be America’s general store and offer everyday essentials at affordable prices from right around the corner.  We strive to make shopping hassle-free and convenient with easy-to-shop stores and deliver everyday low prices on frequently-needed items including food, snacks, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, housewares, seasonal items, paper products and much more from America’s most-trusted brands and products, along with high-quality private brands.

From serving our customers with value and convenience and our employees with career opportunities to serving the communities we call home through literacy and education; Dollar General has been committed to our simple and powerful mission of Serving Others since the company’s founding in 1939.

Our mission is simple — Serving Others. Every time we open our doors, we do so with that purpose-driven commitment in mind. Whether it’s offering affordable access to name brands in convenient locations, creating jobs that grow into meaningful careers or investing in life-changing educational programs, we strive every day to impact the communities we call home.

At Dollar General, our mission drives our pursuit of ways we serve our customers, communities and employees, and guides our actions every day. We strive to be a positive business partner and good community neighbor, understanding millions of Americans rely on Dollar General to provide convenient, affordable access to the everyday products they need and want In fact, approximately 75% percent of the U.S. population currently lives within five miles of a Dollar General store.  We believe each DG store and distribution center represents positive economic growth for our communities through the creation of local jobs, as well as opportunities for employee development and career advancement.

We further demonstrate our mission through ardent support of literacy and education.  Each year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) provides the opportunity for schools, nonprofit organizations and libraries within a 15-mile radius of a store or distribution center to apply for grants to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs at www.dgliteracy.org. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has invested more than $238 million in nonprofit organizations,  schools  and libraries that have helped more than 19.6 million individuals of all ages to  read,  prepare  for their  high  school equivalency diploma or learn English.
