Entertaining Kids on a Snow Day

February 07, 2018

The groundhog may have declared six more weeks of winter, which means there may be a chance for another snowfall in the weather forecast. If you have a snow day off with your kids, make entertaining children easy as you wait for the temperatures to rise, the snow to melt and for schools to be back in session by creating a snow day activity tote.

Find a simple storage tote or container like this trueliving® Storage Tote to store activity supplies then consider adding the following essentials to make your indoor snow day fun and affordable:

Masking Tape:
Masking tape is an inexpensive and versatile tool to consider adding to your snow day activity tote. Children can let their creativity run as they design roads and obstacles on carpet flooring for toy cars. Find DG Hardware™ masking tape and a variety of toy cars for your child’s racetrack city in-store or online at www.dollargeneral.com. If toy cars aren’t of interest, use masking tape to mark the outline of a tic-tac-toe layout on the carpet floor. Use items of choice for the Xs and Os. This is a great activity to get the whole family involved!

Balloons:
Balloons can be a great way to keep your kids moving indoors! Play indoor balloon volleyball by inflating a balloon and tying a piece of string across the room to serve as the makeshift net. Play one-on-one or in a team! Keep score on who can return the balloon across the net without it falling to the ground. Consider creating “tennis rackets” by taping wooden craft sticks to paper plates. This may be another fun use for masking tape! Find an assortment of colorful balloons in-store or online with Dollar General!

Food Color:
Scoop snow into a plastic tote, bin or bowl to bring the snow indoors! Mix water with Clover Valley® Food Color and Egg Dye in cups or bowls. Create designs with brushes or spray bottles in the snow. Spray bottles can be a fun alternative to brushes, but you may want to consider using them as an outdoor activity to keep your home clean. Mixing colors can also be a great way to teach children how primary colors turn into secondary colors.

Baking Soda and Vinegar:
Put on an easy, inexpensive science experiment with a few household supplies! For a fun experiment, cover a baking sheet with Clover Valley® Baking Soda and then drop or spray small amounts of Clover Valley® White Vinegar onto the baking soda. Your child will be able to observe the two ingredients react to create a fizzy result. Add leftover food color to the vinegar to create a colorful reaction! This can be another great opportunity for your child to learn and mix colors together. Tip: Use a medicine dropper, if you have one, to make the experiment easier.

Other items to consider including in your activity tote include baking supplies, board games, puzzles and coloring books. Keeping a snow day activity tote in the house may leave you prepared for fun the next time you find yourself and the kids indoors for the day!
