Dollar General Brings Mission of Serving Others to Life at Dollar General 300
Dollar General gives $50,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Dollar General and Unilever gives $72,500 to Charlotte Schools
Goodlettsville, Tenn. (October 16, 2012) - Prior to the Dollar General 300 on October 12, 2012, Dollar General reinforced its commitment to Serving Others in Charlotte, N.C., with some special grants to local organizations and schools. Dollar General presented Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the nation’s leading breast cancer awareness and research organization, with a $50,000 grant. The discount retailer also joined with Unilever to award a total of $72,500 to support literacy efforts at Iredell-Statesville School District, the Cabarrus County School District, Ashley Park Elementary and Speedway Children’s Charities.
“At Dollar General, we are committed to Serving Others in Charlotte and in all the communities we call home,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “We’re glad to support initiatives that are important to our customers and recognize these organizations and schools for the great work they do every day.”
For the second year, Dollar General and Charlotte Motor Speedway joined together to turn the track pink to raise breast cancer awareness. Prior to the race, breast cancer survivors were honored during a “ring of survivors” on the front stretch.
This marks the sixth year that Dollar General and Unilever have sponsored “Reading Puts You on the Track to Victory” for Charlotte-area schools. The program promotes reading by giving students the opportunity to meet pre-determined reading goals and receive rewards. More than 5,000 students from 28 schools in the Charlotte area participated in this year’s program, reading more than 2.5 million minutes. Three thousand students were awarded tickets to the Dollar General 300 as a result of their reading efforts.
